Horse lovers of all ages are encouraged to create an Icelandic horse-themed artwork and enter it into an art contest in celebration of the International Day of the Icelandic Horse.

Horses of Iceland, the Icelandic Embassy in Berlin and IPZV, the Icelandic horse association in Germany, have launched an art contest for the entire family on the occasion of the International Day of the Icelandic Horse. The day is usually celebrated on 1 May but because of the COVID-19 pandemic it has been postponed until 12 September.

People of all ages are encouraged to participate in the art contest and draw or paint a picture of the Icelandic horse in Icelandic nature, using any art technique. The artwork should be scanned in high resolution and entered into the contest by email by 30 July.

There are three age categories: Children (10-years-old and younger), teenagers (10 to 18-years-old) and adults (older than 18). The images need to be in landscape format because the winning entries will be published in a calendar for 2021.

After the deadline expires, a jury will choose the 12 best pictures and release them on the organisers’ social media before the calendar is published. One hundred participants, selected at random, will receive the printed calendar in the mail.

Please email your entry to geschaeftsstelle@ipzv.de by 30 July, including the title of the artwork, as well as the artist’s name, age, postal address and email address. Hold on to the original.

The International Day of the Icelandic Horse was first celebrated on 1 May 2016 and has since been a fixed annual event. Owners of Icelandic horses and Icelandic horse associations around the world are encouraged to show a sense of community and share their love for the Icelandic horse by introducing its qualities to others. Some invite friends along for a ride, others open up their stables to the public or organise public events. Afterwards, they are asked to share photos and videos from the day’s events on social media with the hashtag: #horsesoficeland.

The programme for the International Day of the Icelandic Horse on 12-13 September 2020 will be advertised later on Horses of Iceland’s event calendar.
