Documentary series Equus Worldwide features five horse breeds in different places in the world: Iceland, India, Africa and the Americas. It traces the origins of the breeds and their development through centuries, and discusses their role in the past and present.
Equus Worldwide Iceland, which is approximately 20 minutes, was broadcast on international multi-screen network Horse & Country TV on 14th May and will have a global reach of more than 45 million.
The film crew visited Iceland in March 2019. Horses of Iceland project manager Jelena Ohm helped put together an itinerary and find interviewees according to the producer’s wishes. Hólar University College played a big part in the programme, where Sveinn Ragnarsson, Head of the school’s Equine Science Department, and head riding teacher Mette Mannseth discussed the education and the breed’s qualities. The programme also covers horse tourism at farm Hvammur II and horse breeding at farm Hafsteinsstaðir. The crew then observed an ice tölt tournament, the Mývatn Open – Horses on Ice, on the frozen lake Mývatn in Northeast Iceland. The crew’s conclusion was that in Iceland they had found “a people and a culture deeply connected to the animal and the land.”
Director/Producer Philippa Armsby-Ward comments: “I’ve travelled extensively with my job and this was my first trip to Iceland. I was surprised at the warmth and friendliness of everyone we met – the people, the culture and the horses were all wonderful. I’d definitely head back at the first opportunity. I want to ride from north to south in the summer – it looks like a magical trek.”
Jelena Ohm states that the programme will have a great impact on the marketing of the Icelandic horse. “One of our goals with Horses of Iceland is to raise awareness of the qualities of the Icelandic horse and our community to owners and riders of other horse breeds and the general public. This documentary is a great opportunity for spreading our message and we are thrilled about the results”.
