The Nordic agricultural ministers and their entourages, approximately 60 people, recently came on an official visit to Iceland. One of the reasons for their visit was to familiarise themselves with the Icelandic horse and the Horses of Iceland marketing project. They were invited to Gangmyllan horse breeding at farm Syðri-Gegnishólar by Selfoss in South Iceland, owned by Olil Amble and Bergur Jónsson.

Horses of Iceland project manager Jelena Ohm presented the project and afterwards Olil spoke about his horse breeding goals and the qualities of the Icelandic horse. Following the presentation, the visitors were given a tour of the stables at Syðri-Gegnishólar and were invited to observe a private horse show in the on-site riding arena. Gangmyllan’s riders demonstrated the talent of its best horses of the highest professional standard while Olil served as a commentator, explaining the different gaits and riding techniques. The visit was considered a great success and opportunities for future collaborations were created.

The visit was organised by the Nordic Council of Minister, which is chaired by Iceland this year. While in Iceland, the ministers discussed climate change, among other subjects, and planted trees in Gunnarsholt in South Iceland to carbon offset their travels.
